Not Mosque - Say Masjid !
Salaam,
A few years ago I read somewhere the word 'Mosque' was originated from Spain at the time of the reign of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella when they were expanding Christianity against the Muslims one of the supposedly stated they were going to swat the Muslims in the Masjid where they congregate, like mosquitoes.
I am not sure whether the story is true however, universally a Masjid is a Masjid, whether you are an Arab/Asian/African/European - so the idea arose in me to start a petition to revive the word Masjid to be used instead of a Mosque - if the Indian's can do this for Bombay to Mumbai then why can't we !
Let me know what you think.

Salaam, I have also heard
Salaam,
I have also heard this story although, I visted Andalucia some years ago and one of our group, a very learned Imam who had read extensively about Andalucia said he had not come across anyything to verify this story.
This is interesting discussion though, should we be lookingt o standardise the Arabic terms.
Obviously Masjid is the Arabic terms and derived from the root word which means to prostrate.
Mosque - The word entered the English language most likely through French (mosquée), fromPortuguese (mesquita), from Spanish (mezquita), and from Berber (tamezgida), [source wikipedia]
Wa'Allaikum
Wa'Allaikum A'Salaam,
Jazakallah for responding.
Well, there are certain words such as 'Masjid' that are universally understood by Muslims to mean what they represent - if there
is there any truth to the story then, it should be a pressing need to replace the word 'mosque' with 'Masjid' anyway - also most Muslims
wherever they may be don't know what a mosque is, but without any question understand and relate with the word Masjid.
Wa'Salaam,
I think this story is linked
I think this story is linked to April Fools Day. Apparently Muslims are not allowed to celebrate April Fools Day as the origins of the celebration lie in making fools of Muslims on the 1st of April and this celebration spread.
Salamz Where will this
Salamz
Where will this indulgence with arabic stop? A word is a word in a language. Next the brother/sister would want all Musavic and Dudayevs in amongst Rusianic muslims to be renamed as Musa and Daood. We are muslims but we are not arabs. When we talk punjabi, we use the word "maseet" and when we are speaking english, we use "mosque". Now you want to purge "maseet" from my language too? George Orwell's Ministry of Culture in Airstip One would be too please with the idea.
Well said !!! The deen has
Well said !!! The deen has been hijacked by a bunch of idiots who think they are Arabs, and who know nothing about real life, or how to treat people according to the sunnah. Their over inflated egos are going to turn more and more eople off.
