Support Deaf BME People

Take positive steps to reach out and support Deaf BME people

Ishara invites you to the launch of a major  development within our work - A Framework for Action designed to improve the quality of life for deaf BME people in Scotland.  We are  seeking to increase understanding of people's needs and improve the impact of services available to them, their families, carers and communities.

Why we must take action

It is acknowledged that deaf BME people suffer from multiple forms of discrimination and are amongst the most isolated people in society as a  result.  New equalities duties are being developed in Scotland arising from the Single Equality Act 2010 and these will take effect in 2012.  A national action plan for human rights policy and practice is also being developed following a comprehensive mapping of human rights issues in Scotland by the Scottish Human Rights Commission in the course of next year. It is vital that the needs of this vulnerable group are not overlooked when people are responding to these developments

Ensuring that deaf BME people are included

We are determined that the rights of deaf people and particularly those from BME communities are properly considered as these policies are developed and implemented   More importantly, we think that this is a good time to engage with communities and service providers to identify positive action that they are taking in this area, things that they would like to be able to achieve and the barriers which may be stopping them from doing so.

From principles to practice

We will be encouraging service providers, communities and individuals to respond to our ideas and to make concrete proposals for things that can be done to help this extremely isolated group of people.  Details of how to do this will be shared at the launch and through further e-mail updates.

How you can get involved

We are  launching this process and publishing our Framework Document early next year and want to promote discussion in communities and agencies and online on  practical action which can deliver positive change.
